Ukrainian engines show how one supplier can halt a fleet

Russia's loss of Ukrainian engine supply shows how one political rupture can halt modern frigate construction.

Notes

Propulsion, waste disposal, and computing plant all depend on manufacturers beyond the final shipyard. Russia's actions against Ukraine cut new frigate programmes, including the Admiral Gorshkov class, off from Ukrainian engine supplies. Investment in designs and hull construction could not replace the missing propulsion equipment. The example shows how a warship built domestically can remain dependent on a foreign supplier for machinery essential to entering service.
