Planet-killing deterrence destroys what an empire wants to control

A strategy built around annihilating planets sacrifices the productive territory it seeks to rule while leaving prestige ships open to cheaper asymmetric attacks.

Notes

The Tarkin Doctrine fails when tested against the political purpose of imperial force. A planet-killing fleet can terrorize a population, but repeated destruction leaves the regime controlling unproductive ruins rather than functioning societies. Capital ships optimized for that spectacular mission also leave smaller attackers free to exploit their weak defensive perimeter. The doctrine combines self-defeating coercion with an asymmetric military vulnerability. Effective control requires force that can compel, occupy, and protect without destroying the value of the territory.
