The PLAN Marine Corps expanded through successive reorganizations

A dated force-structure account separates Marine Corps growth from additional amphibious formations in the ground forces.

Notes

The Marine Corps history begins with its establishment in 1953, disbandment in 1957, and return in 1979. By 2017 it had two brigades totaling roughly 12,000 personnel. The November 2025 figures place it at eight brigades, with about 45,000 to 48,000 personnel directly in the force and a larger total including associated support. Amphibious formations in the PLA ground forces add another pool of trained personnel. Brigade organization is also discussed, with explicit uncertainty about recent changes to air-assault elements.
