Pius V held together a league that outlived him only briefly

The coalition unraveled after Pius V's death, leaving its army unused and Cyprus in Ottoman hands despite victory at sea.

Notes

Pius V supplied the political influence needed to keep Catholic rulers aligned, especially through his relationship with Philip II. Venice benefited by persuading partners to fight a war it could not sustain alone. Once the pope died in 1572, the coalition began to unravel and was formally dissolved in March 1573. Its planned land army never deployed to recover Cyprus, which remained Ottoman at the end of the war. Lepanto's operational cooperation depended on a fragile personal and diplomatic framework.
