Piorun's attack belonged to a coordinated destroyer operation

Piorun and four other destroyers coordinated their pressure on Bismarck using tactics developed through interwar exercises.

Notes

The destroyers around Bismarck took separated positions so they could attack in turn during the night without engaging one another. Piorun operated with four other destroyers in that effort. Describing her action as a solo attack obscures the coordination with the Tribal-class ships and the crews supporting her. Their task was to box in an enemy capital ship overnight, applying methods developed through Royal Navy exercises in the 1930s. Dalrymple-Hamilton helped teach that approach through his own flotilla command and example to junior officers.
