Piet Hein's approach to command and risk

Hein's command style combined management of senior subordinates with a preference for avoiding risks unnecessary to the mission.

Notes

Hein managed a Dutch force whose subordinate officers could be senior to him in age or rank. His record included losses as well as a great victory achieved with little fighting. He appears to have been a somewhat conservative commander who disliked taking unnecessary risks. That caution is judged reasonable for a senior officer, alongside his ability to pursue the objective that mattered.
