Pickersgill's group, the lifeboat, and HMS Chitral

Men sheltered on the poop under fire, but only eleven reached a drifting waterlogged lifeboat and survived the night to be rescued by HMS Chitral.

Notes

As fire swept Rawalpindi, 40 to 50 men under Lieutenant Pickersgill gathered on the poop, the only part of the ship not being swept by gunfire. With wounded men among them and no obvious route to safety, they shared cigarettes and waited. A waterlogged lifeboat then drifted past, but the dazed group faced a 30-foot jump into rough water and only some went over the side. Eleven men reached the boat and endured the cold until HMS Chitral picked them up the next day, numb and exhausted. The episode turns an abstract survivor count into a study of how damage, shock, sea conditions, and chance shaped who lived.
