Phillip's legal protections and their later erosion

A convict's ability to sue a Crown officer illustrates legal ideals that later Corps rule failed to preserve.

Notes

Arthur Phillip's colonial plan included legal protections for convicts. One example was a convict's ability to sue a Crown officer accused of breaking the rules and stealing from him. That recourse gave practical force to the colony's stated civil liberties. The later conduct of the New South Wales Corps stands in contrast to those early protections.
