A change of governor renews rebellion in the Philippines

Replacing Fernando Primo de Rivera with Basilio Agustín coincided with Spain's failure to honor its Philippine settlement and renewed revolutionary activity.

Notes

Spain replaced Fernando Primo de Rivera as governor of the Philippines in April 1898. His successor, Basilio Agustín, took office as the crisis with the United States was approaching war. Spain failed to honor the terms of its settlement with the rebels, a failure attributed largely to the new governor. Revolutionary activity consequently revived just as Spain needed to defend the islands against an American attack.
