Phalanx originated as a 1960s concept, developed during the 1970s and fitted during the 1980s. Its familiar service appearance followed a long development period. A much larger related concept using a 37 mm or 40 mm weapon is also recalled, with uncertainty over the calibre. Increasing the gun size came with a substantial increase in the size of the system.
