The steel four-masted barque Peter Iredale was lost on the Oregon coast after a sixteen-year career. Thick mist, strong winds, and a rising tide drove the ballast-laden ship onto Clatsop Spit in October 1906, but a lifeboat from Hammond helped evacuate the crew without casualties. The inquiry commended the crew, while changing weather and the ship settling into the sand defeated plans to tow her free. Remnants of the wreck remain visible on the beach.
