Pensacola escorts a vital reinforcement convoy to Australia

A prewar departure for Manila became an emergency escort mission carrying troops, aircraft, artillery, ammunition, and fuel to Australia.

Notes

Pensacola left Pearl Harbor on 29 November 1941 escorting a strategically valuable convoy bound for the Philippines. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the force diverted to Australia with thousands of personnel, aircraft, artillery, vehicles, ammunition, and aviation fuel. The cargo included 52 Douglas A-24 aircraft, 18 crated Curtiss P-40 fighters, 20 75 mm field artillery pieces, and 2,600 US Army Air Forces personnel. Canberra, Perth, and HMNZS Achilles reinforced the cruiser escort, while the Grimsby-class sloops Swan and Warrego added anti-submarine protection before the convoy reached Australia. Because the convoy sailed before the Pacific war began, it shows Allied reinforcement infrastructure already moving when strategy had to adapt to the Japanese attacks.
