Chapter ยท 34:34-36:08

Penelope survives a U-boat torpedo and presses the coast

Penelope's heavier anti-aircraft fit, survival of a UB-29 torpedo hit, and close-in patrols off the enemy coast show both adaptation and operational aggression.

Notes

Penelope carried a four-inch anti-aircraft gun in place of the smaller weapons fitted to some sisters, an early example of wartime armament variation within the class. She joined the Harwich Force's Fifth Light Cruiser Squadron in 1915. UB-29 torpedoed her off Norfolk in April 1916, but repairs returned her to service and she later joined the Grand Fleet's Seventh Light Cruiser Squadron. Her captain also had a habit of operating very close to the enemy shoreline. That aggressive coastal patrolling adds operational character to a career that otherwise demonstrates the class's ability to survive damage and return to fleet work.
