Chapter · 43:43-48:31

Emden's surprise attack at Penang

Emden used a false funnel and a last-minute flag change to enter Penang and destroy the unready Russian cruiser Zhemchug.

Notes

The raid shows the value and legal limits of disguise: the cruiser could imitate a British silhouette with a false fourth funnel, but had to show German colors before opening fire. Zhemchug was caught at rest with her captain and a magazine-key holder ashore, leaving the Russian crew unable to reach full readiness. Penang also served as a maintenance and convoy-support hub, so the attack threatened the support network as well as the warships anchored there. Emden used one torpedo from each side while circling the harbor and combined those attacks with close-range gunfire. The second torpedo reached a magazine and destroyed Zhemchug before Penang's defenders could respond effectively. The two absent Russian officers were reduced to ordinary seamen instead of being sent to Siberia or executed, and both later distinguished themselves during the war.
