Peleliu's defenders combined fire discipline with night infiltration

Selective fire and attacks on casualty evacuation increased losses, while small night infiltrations forced Marines to keep watch in pairs.

Notes

Japanese defenders held their fire until they could inflict heavy casualties. They targeted stretcher-bearers to draw more personnel into danger and to damage the scarce medical support on which wounded men depended. At night, small groups tried to infiltrate American lines and cause damage. Marines used two-man fighting holes so that one man could sleep while the other watched.
