Peer competition reopens the battleship question

Battleships historically emerged from symmetrical naval competition, raising the question of whether renewed peer rivalry changes the Cold War verdict against them.

Notes

Battleships tend to emerge when comparable fleets expect to fight each other. Cold War naval competition instead pushed the Soviet Union toward asymmetric ways of challenging a stronger opposing maritime power, and the later unipolar period offered little reason to revive the type. Historically, symmetrical competition encouraged principal warships built to inflict maximum damage on an enemy counterpart. Renewed peer competition does not prove that a battleship is needed, but it makes the mission worth reconsidering under conditions different from the Cold War and its aftermath.
