Don Pedro de Valdés was held by Richard Drake, a court official with direct access to Elizabeth I. Such proximity to the monarch carried trust and made him a suitable custodian for a prestigious captive who might be used in diplomacy. During several years in English custody, Valdés was displayed at social occasions and revised a Spanish-English dictionary published in 1591. He returned in 1593 after a £1,500 ransom and a prisoner exchange, then later became governor of Cuba.
