From Pedestal to a new destroyer template

At Operation Pedestal, the Tribals faced air, surface, and submarine threats; their size and room for adaptation also influenced later destroyer design.

Notes

At Operation Pedestal, destroyers had to defend a convoy against air, surface, and submarine threats at once. The Tribals were the most general-purpose ships among an already versatile type. Their larger hulls provided room for wartime radar and anti-aircraft adaptation. Other destroyer designs had to remove torpedo banks to make such changes, while the Tribals had already exchanged one installation for extra guns. That combination of growth margin, gun power, and multi-threat employment helped establish the model followed by later general-purpose destroyers.
