Peatross's detached squad changes the fight

Cut off from Carlson, Oscar Peatross's twelve-man squad attacks the Japanese rear, destroys communications, and withdraws on its own timetable.

Notes

Peatross's detachment appeared behind the garrison, killed several Japanese personnel, knocked out a machine gun, and destroyed the enemy radio. The squad lost three dead and two wounded but still could not contact Carlson. Its attack reduced pressure on the main Raider body. Peatross then followed the planned withdrawal timetable and evacuated his casualties at dusk, an example of independent small-unit command under confused conditions.
