Chapter ยท 1:09-3:28

Pearl Harbor's warning and command failures

Why Pearl Harbor's importance made its weak defenses, restricted intelligence flow, and inadequate fleet support especially consequential.

Notes

Pearl Harbor's value should have prompted exceptional defensive effort. Kimmel's removal from key intelligence distribution forms a strong part of his defense, since commanders cannot prepare for threats they are not allowed to see. Even without the withheld intelligence, Kimmel was already warning that the base lacked adequate defenses, fuel, and support infrastructure. Those shortages help explain Nimitz's later reorganization of Pacific Fleet logistics and facilities.
