Why wartime practice can exceed peacetime manuals

Peacetime manuals can understate what crews will do in combat because their safety assumptions change under wartime necessity.

Notes

A peacetime restriction on a gun's firing angle does not necessarily mean the gun cannot fire there. The restriction may protect parts of the ship from damage during practice. Engaging an enemy changes the calculation because that damage may be acceptable in combat. Equipment carried for presence missions and other peacetime duties may also be removed in wartime.
