Why wartime submarines targeted escorts

Peacetime exercises rewarded spectacular capital-ship attacks, whereas wartime submarines could weaken a whole convoy by sinking a destroyer.

Notes

Short peacetime exercises encouraged submarine commanders to bypass escorts and pursue a prestigious attack on a battleship, cruiser, or aircraft carrier. Wartime incentives were different. Sinking a destroyer removed a scarce escort and trained crew from the convoy screen. The reactions of nearby escorts could also distract them from the rest of a U-boat pack. Exercise incentives could therefore reward tactics that offered less operational value in combat.
