Chapter · 1:46:43-1:51:31

Peacekeeper Initiative and security after empire

A trade mission encounters a fragile government, inherited imperial institutions, and attacks that prevent local reinforcements from moving.

Notes

In The Peacekeeper Initiative, trade negotiations take place on a former slave world whose imperial rulers departed fourteen months earlier. The former conquerors' language remains the only language shared by all the negotiators. A new government is trying to represent the population, but some groups believe they have been excluded. Gunfire interrupts the meeting, and reports of sabotage reveal that transport links needed to bring reinforcements are out of action. The visiting diplomatic and military representatives must assess an insecure political settlement while the local government tries to preserve authority over the response.
