Kountouriotis takes command of Georgios Averof

Unfamiliar British food helped provoke unrest aboard Averof, bringing Kountouriotis to Britain to restore discipline and train her crew.

Notes

Kountouriotis went to Britain in June 1911 to take command of Georgios Averof after unrest among her crew. The Italian-built ship had gone there for guns and its first ammunition supply. Sailors unfamiliar with blue cheese mistook its edible mould for spoiled food, provoking unrest and the replacement of the original captain. A trusted senior officer was needed to restore discipline and train the ship's company. The incident explains the practical importance of preparing personnel for unfamiliar food and customs, comparable to American preparations for personnel travelling to Britain in World War II.
