The Hawaiian cession did not end Paulet's naval career

Paulet continued to Crimean War service and eventual flag rank, while a superior officer had to resolve the diplomatic consequences in Hawaii.

Notes

The defence of Paulet's conduct rests on his duty to protect the British Crown's standing. Once he had accepted the cession, finding a way back became a task for a more senior officer. The affair nevertheless left him able to continue his Royal Navy career, including service in the Crimean War. He eventually became an admiral, so the diplomatic reversal in Hawaii did not end his advancement.
