When patrol substitution preserves presence but loses capability

Concrete patrol duties show how smaller ships sustain overseas commitments while reducing the capability available on each station.

Notes

The patrol list retains Antarctic, Caribbean, Falklands, South Atlantic, and Mediterranean responsibilities despite the smaller escort force. HMS Protector covers the Antarctic role, while a River-class patrol vessel or auxiliary maintains Caribbean presence for counter-drug work, hurricane relief, and support to Commonwealth and British overseas territories. HMS Forth combines Falklands and South Atlantic duties that previously drew on larger ships, and HMS Trent covers Mediterranean responsibilities. Patrol-vessel substitution keeps a presence around important sea routes while reducing the capability supplied there. The accompanying argument is that participation in trade-route decisions depends partly on having ships present.
