Upgrading a destroyer-flotilla leader

Pathfinder’s replacement guns and service with home-water destroyer flotillas show how rapidly the class had to adapt before the First World War.

Notes

Pathfinder's original three-pounders were replaced by six-pounders, and the class received nine four-inch guns in 1911-12. She served with the Atlantic Fleet, Channel Fleet, and Home Fleet before entering wartime service with the 8th Destroyer Flotilla. These home-water assignments kept the scout in its intended role as a flotilla leader and support ship. The rapid rearmament also shows how quickly the original anti-destroyer battery became inadequate.
