Patey received permission to head east on 8 November, a week after Coronel. His force subsequently included Australia, Newcastle, the Japanese armoured cruisers Izumo and Asama, and the former Russian battleship Hizen. Its responsibilities included preventing a German move toward Canadian waters and following an attempt to reach the Atlantic. Searches around the Galapagos found no trace of von Spee. The force then learned that the Germans had rounded Cape Horn and been defeated at the Falklands on 8 December.
