Limited support facilities reduce Pascal to a ten-knot cruiser

Pascal's machinery deterioration shows how overseas basing choices could erase the speed promised by a cruiser design.

Notes

By 1904, roughly five years in East Asia had left Pascal in poor condition. France possessed limited local facilities, and national pride discouraged use of available British support. Japanese help may also have been available. Reports might still credit the cruiser with 16 to 18 knots, but logs show that she usually made only about 10 or 11, while higher speeds threatened the machinery. Her overseas support system had become a direct limit on combat readiness and crew confidence.
