Chapter ยท 22:56-25:59

A serving officer in Parliament

Beresford's simultaneous naval and parliamentary careers created influence, but also a persistent conflict over public criticism of Admiralty policy.

Notes

As Conservative MP for County Waterford, Beresford publicly criticised Admiralty policy while still a serving naval officer. The Admiralty considered removing him from active employment, while Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli protected a useful parliamentary seat. Beresford's movement between naval service and politics resembled a Roman-style career driven by an expectation of ever higher office. His conduct exposed the conflict between legitimate parliamentary scrutiny and a uniformed officer using political power against his own service leadership.
