Parker, Nelson, and Amazon prepare for Copenhagen

The fleet assembled under Hyde Parker and Nelson while Amazon combined repairs, stowage, gunnery practice, and small-arms training before returning toward Texel.

Notes

Vice Admiral Archibald Dickson had already led a diplomatic mission to Copenhagen, but by winter he was assembling a fleet for a less diplomatic return. Sir Hyde Parker became commander-in-chief with Nelson as second-in-command. The intended division was simple: Parker would negotiate, while Nelson would fight if talks failed. Amazon's preparation at Yarmouth joined strategy to shipboard work. Caulkers repaired the decks while the crew set up rigging, stowed the holds, and practiced great guns and small arms. One royal salute on New Year's Day marked the union with Ireland before the frigate headed back toward Texel.
