The new fleet was immediately assigned to carry troops and artillery to Manuel Belgrano's small army in Paraguay. An initial success at Campichuelo was followed by defeat at Paraguarí, where Belgrano found that local opposition to Spain did not mean willingness to accept direction from Buenos Aires. The relief mission was an attempt to reinforce a failing campaign rather than a routine transport operation. After San Nicolás destroyed that supply route, Belgrano's army was defeated again at Tacuarí, and the revolutionary side lacked a navy for roughly two years. The interception also affected the dispute over who would control the post-imperial political order.
