Panokseon hulls were optimized for Korean coastal combat

Korean panokseon and turtle ships traded long-distance efficiency for maneuverability, cannon employment, and control in confined coastal waters.

Notes

The panokseon formed the core of the Joseon battle fleet, with a raised command position and space to operate cannon. Turtle ships are described as adaptations of this established hull tradition rather than wholly separate inventions. Rounded Korean hull forms turned readily in coastal combat, while deeper V-shaped Japanese hulls were more efficient for transport over distance. The contrast shows how hull geometry reflected the two fleets' different operational purposes.
