Panay and Anglo-American river cooperation

USS Panay becomes a Yangtze Patrol case study in river security, crisis response, and British-American naval cooperation before the Pacific War.

Notes

Panay moves the discussion from generic river gunboats to the diplomacy of actual patrol stations. British Insect-class vessels Ladybird and Bee went toward Panay while the Japanese attack was still under way, showing how closely Royal Navy and U.S. Navy river forces could cooperate in China. Gunboats served as crisis-management assets as well as small combatants.
