Paint, flags, and fleet identification

Similar or inconsistent hull colours made flags essential for identifying warships and distinguishing fleets in battle.

Notes

An idealized Spanish warship image cautions against assuming that familiar paint schemes belonged exclusively to the Royal Navy. Eighteenth-century ships could appear in different colours within one fleet or share similar colours across opposing fleets. That visual ambiguity helps explain the importance of conspicuous flags and ensigns for establishing identity. Paint was therefore a command-and-control problem with immediate tactical consequences, as well as a decorative detail.
