Pack for practical archive work

Bring reliable note-taking and imaging equipment, backups, power, cash, and a pencil while respecting reading-room rules.

Notes

Archive work needs a legible note-taking method, a capable camera, chargers, backup storage, cash, and a pencil. Some repositories lack adequate photocopying, so wide and close photographs may be the only practical way to capture a document. Reliable power and redundant storage protect a full day's work. Ink, food, and drink stay out of the reading room to protect original material. Older books may be inspected or excluded because people have tried to insert pages and falsify collections. The equipment plan must satisfy both preservation rules and the need to leave with a usable research record.
