If Singapore and Malaya had gone better, could Britain have mounted a Taranto-style carrier raid on Truk?
Short answerIt was possible only with a carrier available in theatre, which required different construction choices or avoiding the losses of Courageous, Glorious, and Ark Royal.
NotesA Taranto-style attack on Truk was conceptually possible, but carrier availability was the decisive constraint. Better naval prospects at Singapore and in Malaya likewise depended on having a carrier able to challenge the invasion forces and their air cover. British construction choices limited that reserve before the war. Wartime losses then removed Courageous, Glorious, and Ark Royal through very different operational failures and damage-control outcomes. Preserving even some of those ships would have created more options for Force Z and a later Pacific raid. The counterfactual turns on generating and preserving scarce carrier strength rather than transferring the Taranto plan to another map.
