In 1897 Amphion, Leander, and Phaeton served together on the Pacific Station alongside the armoured cruiser Imperieuse. Destroyers, a sloop, a gunboat, and depot support completed a mixed force able to cover several kinds of local task. Phaeton's later near-collision with a United States warship in dense fog also hints at the routine navigational risks of such deployments. The station assignment illustrates the class's intended work: sustained British presence and useful naval capability far from home waters.
