Pacific concentration and shortened service lives

The 2022 active list placed roughly two-thirds of the remaining cruisers in the Pacific while several retired ships had served less than three decades.

Notes

The active list at the time of recording shows the class concentrated in the Pacific. Eleven of the seventeen ships were assigned there, including both the oldest and youngest active examples. Ships could leave service before the nominal 35-year point when the Navy chose not to put them through another major refit. Two examples had served less than 29 years, although one had suffered accidents that helped explain its earlier disposal. Fleet geography, material condition, and refit choices all qualify headline service-life figures.
