An Anaconda strategy against Japan

The island campaign is compared with the American Civil War's Anaconda Plan: a methodical isolation strategy that took time but steadily removed Japan's resources and freedom of movement.

Notes

The Pacific campaign worked by constricting Japan rather than requiring one spectacular knockout. Its four-year arc is compared with the American Civil War: roughly a year to put the strategy into effect and several years for economic and geographic pressure to become decisive. By 1945 Japan had been cut off from supplies and reduced to defending the home islands, leaving invasion, siege, or blockade as grim but increasingly one-sided endgames.
