Why campaign histories hide older aircraft types

Narratives centered on major campaigns and headline aircraft often absorb A5Ms and other replacement airframes into generic squadron totals.

Notes

Campaign histories tend to follow a main line from the opening of a war through its principal battles to the end. Secondary theatres, diversionary operations, and mixed squadron inventories then appear only in passing, if at all. Specialist studies can reveal A5Ms filling losses beside Zeros, much as Wildcats or Swordfish remained in units theoretically equipped with newer aircraft. Bibliographies, archival references, and Japanese-language source lists give researchers a route back to those obscured details. Recovering these aircraft requires both specialist service histories and the research methods needed to find them.
