Ōtori-class torpedo boats blur the destroyer boundary

The Ōtori class combines escort-scale dimensions with destroyer-like guns and torpedoes, exposing the weakness of simple type labels.

Notes

The Ōtori class is presented as the successor to the troubled Chidori design and as a practical small escort. At about 960 tons in battle condition, 88.5 metres long, and capable of 30.5 knots, it remained comparable in scale and performance to the destroyers and British escorts discussed nearby. Its three 120 mm guns and triple torpedo mounting closely resemble the armament of the Wakatake destroyers, while a claimed 4,000-mile range at 14 knots gave it greater endurance than the Chidori class. English-language sources vary between "Kampon" and "Kanpon" for the machinery name, so the spelling should be treated as a transliteration choice rather than a settled form. The inclusion of minesweeping gear further complicates any attempt to define the ship by one mission. The comparison makes classification a question of design choices and treaty accounting as much as naval vocabulary.
