Why oscillating turrets make little sense at sea

The panel compares tank-style oscillating turrets with the much larger ammunition and stabilisation systems required by naval artillery.

Question

What would be the advantages and disadvantages of oscillating turrets on warships?

Short answer

The disadvantages dominate: they would complicate heavy turret, rangefinder, and ammunition-feed systems without offering a comparable naval benefit.

Notes

An oscillating design would make the heaviest portion of a naval turret move for elevation rather than keeping the armoured mass fixed. That movement would complicate rangefinders and the mechanical ammunition path from magazine to breech. Tank turrets can benefit when a compact autoloader remains local to the gun, but a heavy naval mounting depends on a distributed feed system extending deep into the ship. Warships also need only two-axis stabilisation for the gun line, so the three-dimensional advantage claimed for oscillating tank turrets does not offset the added naval complexity.
