Osborne fundamentals and Dartmouth assessment

Osborne raised basic writing and mathematics to a usable standard before Dartmouth assessed leadership and possible specialist paths.

Notes

The distinction between the colleges is broad rather than absolute: Osborne included naval material, and Dartmouth continued general education. Osborne could bring weak handwriting or mathematics up to a usable standard. Dartmouth then assessed leadership promise and aptitude for gunnery, torpedo work, or, in some periods, engineering. Staging the education this way separated foundational attainment from later professional assessment.
