Chapter · 10:34-14:47

Orzel's escape from Tallinn and passage to Britain

Orzel escaped Estonian internment without charts, reached Britain, and became entangled in the Soviet justification for invading Estonia.

Notes

After entering Tallinn with her commanding officer ill, Orzel faced internment and disarmament under German pressure. Her crew overpowered the guards, cut the moorings, and navigated toward Britain after their charts had been confiscated, eventually receiving a Royal Navy escort off Scotland. The Soviet Union falsely associated the submarine with the loss of the tanker Metallist, using the episode as part of its case against Estonia. Orzel was later lost on patrol in 1940, and searches for her wreck have also located other submarines.
