The Oregon dispute and America's exposed Pacific flank

Earlier Anglo-American disputes left British ships and experienced officers on the Pacific coast, complicating any 1861 war scenario.

Notes

The video connects the Oregon boundary settlement and the San Juan Islands to the strategic geography of a later crisis. The 49th-parallel settlement and the Pig War had already brought British officers such as Geoffrey Hornby into the region. Britain also possessed experienced crews and numerous older warships converted to screw propulsion, giving it usable forces beyond the Atlantic. British ships on the Pacific coast would therefore have presented a problem for a United States concentrating its main naval and military effort against the Confederacy in the east.
