The Ordinances and the Scarborough crisis

The 1311 Ordinances, Gaveston's return, and the stand at Scarborough Castle lead into Warenne's failed guarantee of safe custody.

Notes

Edward II needed money for Scotland as the Ordinances curbed royal power, Gaveston returned from exile, and Scarborough Castle became the focus of the crisis. After Newcastle became unsafe, Edward and Gaveston sailed to Scarborough while the queen traveled overland. Warenne, Pembroke, and Percy pledged their lands as security for Gaveston's protection after his surrender, with a negotiated return to the castle if talks failed. Warwick intercepted the prisoner, and Lancaster, Hereford, and Arundel condemned him before his execution at Blacklow Hill. Oath-bound custody and castle control could not prevent baronial violence from overriding the agreement.
