Orbital strike systems and anti-satellite vulnerability

A hypothetical orbital weapon gains a downward attack path while becoming a target itself.

Notes

An orbital strike system could fire downwards at a ship but would itself be exposed to attack. Space offers a large search volume and few hiding places once an object is located. The prospect of placing global-strike weapons in orbit is treated sceptically. Missile attacks still retain approach-angle limits. SM-3 and the overlap between larger ballistic-missile-defence systems and anti-satellite capabilities illustrate the opposing threat, linked to satellites' long-standing reconnaissance role.
