Operation Vigorous judged by the convoy objective

The Battle of Mid-June is assessed as an Axis victory because the convoy failed, even though a simple casualty tally can suggest the opposite.

Notes

The balance between the large Allied escort and the Italian-German opposition cannot be reduced to ship counts alone. The Allied force lost a cruiser, three destroyers, merchant shipping, and other vessels, while the Axis suffered heavier personnel and aircraft losses as well as damage to a battleship. A casualty ledger can make the result look ambiguous or even favorable to the Allies. The Axis achieved the relevant operational aim by stopping the convoy. Naval outcomes must be judged against missions and supply effects rather than only ships, aircraft, or personnel lost.
