Operation Torch and the warning Dönitz missed

Despite substantial U-boat strength and signs that Atlantic escorts were being diverted, Dönitz failed to identify or stop Operation Torch.

Notes

At the height of German sinkings in November 1942, Dönitz had nearly 200 submarines in the Atlantic but did not disrupt the Operation Torch invasion convoys. Reports of lightly escorted merchant convoys should have prompted him to ask where the missing fast escorts had gone. The Allied concentration for North Africa mattered because success there opened the path toward Sicily and eventually shortened the route through the Mediterranean. The failure to recognize that operational shift illustrates the video's broader judgement that Dönitz remained immersed in submarine activity rather than stepping back to read the campaign.
